We couldn't find a TV stand that we liked and would fit our unique space so my husband decided to make one. It was a perfect fit, but because it was just plywood, it looked unfinished.
We decided to spruce it up by adding Scrabble tiles.
I bought a lot of 400 on eBay for $24.99. (Note: some of these are irregular, so if perfect lines are important to you, you'll probably want to go with another source. We decided not to care.)
Then, I started spelling out words that had meaning to our family. Rio, our tabby, helped.
I knew I could get 10 letters in each row, and that I needed about three hands of tiles to cover up the plywood. (Very scientific measuring, I know.)
I lined them all up and looked at them, checking to make sure that I didn't accidentally spell a word I would regret. I included some words that I spelled vertically because that seemed whimsical and fun.
Then I started gluing. I used a hot glue gun and created a little "X" on the back of each Scrabble tile. I kept gluing. And gluing. And gluing. My husband felt sorry for me so cooked me some turkey bacon and began gluing. When we finished the front, we did the sides too.
We completed the project in about two hours (working in little spurts throughout the weekend). We're not sure if we're going to stain the tiles to match the dark wood of our home. (I tried staining a few last weekend and it was a lot of work for okay results.)
Either way, we now have a unique Scrabble tile TV stand that reflects our love of words, writing, and books.
